California Student Named Recipient of the Coca-Cola Johnston Legacy Scholarship

Local high school student joins elite academic group of 100 2011 winners of annual Coca-Cola college scholarships

SAN RAMON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Coca-Cola has awarded a one-time $5,000 scholarship to Dustin Kobs of Lafayette, Calif., for academic excellence and leadership.

Kobs, who has applied to attend San Diego State University, http://www.sdsu.edu/ is the son of Greg Kobs, who is the supply chain manager for Coca-Cola Refreshments distribution center in Union City.

"I am very excited to start my college adventure and this scholarship gives me a head start," said Kobs, who said he plans to study psychology and kinesiology because of his interest in sports therapy.

Kobs is one of 100 distinguished students selected from applications submitted by Coca-Cola employees on behalf of their children nationwide.

"We are so proud to be able to help our employees further their children's education and reap the rewards of hard work and good citizenships," said William O'Brien, senior vice president of sales for Coca-Cola Refreshments in the Northwest Region.

In 2001, Coca-Cola Enterprises, the largest bottling company for brands of The Coca-Cola Company in the United States and Canada, established the Johnston Legacy Scholarship program in honor of the former CEO Summerfield Johnston. Last October, The Coca-Cola Company purchased the North American operations of CCE.

The scholarship program provides 100 scholarships annually to children of employees of the former North American operations of CCE. Ninety winners will receive one-time scholarships of $5,000 and 10 will receive four-year scholarships of $20,000 for a total of $650,000 in total rewards. This program is just one of several supported by The Coca-Cola Company and The Coca-Cola Foundation. The scholars were chosen from among nearly 400 applicants.
