Washington Students Named Recipients of the Coca-Cola Johnston Legacy Scholarship

Local high school students join elite academic group of 100 2011 winners of annual Coca-Cola college scholarships

BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Coca-Cola has awarded one-time $5,000 scholarships each to Teresa Micheletti of Issaquah and Tanner Lemen of Burien and a four-year, $20,000 scholarship to Madison Hollenbeck of Shoreline for academic excellence and leadership.

These distinguished students are three out of 100 selected from applications submitted by Coca-Cola employees on behalf of their children nationwide.

Micheletti plans to attend Western Washington University http://www.wwu.edu/ . Her father, Joe, is a route planner for delivery trucks in the area. Hollenbeck is headed for Lewis & Clark College http://www.lclark.edu/ in the Portland, Ore., area, and Lemen expects to attend Washington State University http://www.wsu.edu/ . Hollenbeck is the daughter of Bob, a driver and Lemen's father is an inventory supervisor. All work in Bellevue.

"We are so proud to be able to help our employees further their children's education and reap the rewards of hard work and good citizenship," said William O'Brien, senior vice president of sales for Coca-Cola Refreshments in the Northwest Region.

In 2001, Coca-Cola Enterprises, the largest bottling company for brands of The Coca-Cola Company in the United States and Canada, established the Johnston Legacy Scholarship program in honor of the former CEO Summerfield Johnston. Last October, The Coca-Cola Company purchased the North American operations of CCE.

The scholarship program provides 100 scholarships annually to children of employees of the former North American operations of CCE. Ninety winners will receive one-time scholarships of $5,000 and 10 will receive four-year scholarships of $20,000 for a total of $650,000 in total rewards. This program is just one of several supported by The Coca-Cola Company and The Coca-Cola Foundation. https://www.coca-colascholars.org/cokeWeb/

The scholars were chosen from among nearly 400 applicants. An independent judging panel reviewed every application, which includes a recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, or other school official, and one from an unrelated individual with whom the applicant has worked on a job or community volunteer service activity.
